Mei Line: Design

My designs are always responding to a specific need.

The first piece I created was done to fit exactly the corner left in our John Pawson designed living room, that would accept a piece of furniture. Needless to say that it had to be perfect.
Bill Amberg did it for me, and we still have it stored somewhere, waiting to find it's precise location. That was before digital cameras, one day I will fish a picture out...

In Santiago, were the sun shines 9 month a year with no rain, the terrace is a very important part of the house, and outdoor seating is an essential piece of furniture. So, after searching unsuccessfully for that perfect vintage tropical wood outdoor bench or sofa, I could not resolve myself to buy the ubicuous boring and uncomfortable square resin rattan-look-a-like-with-cream-cushions living room. That was the first self edited piece of design in a long serie. Having sourced a very talented ironmonger, I designed an iron structure, fitted high density cushions with linen removable covers, and the outdoor living room very quickly became the hub of the house.

To also enjoy the garden view, were created a cantilevered chair with ottoman, with just the right angle to be comfortable enough not to need any cushion

Presented at Santiago's main decoration and design fair Bazaar Ed, in december 2009, they were snapped within a day

After the L version of the lounge, came a U version for big spaces and big crowds, as in the garden of this house in provence:

Same problematic with the table, designed for large parties in Santiago:

And even larger ones, here in Provence, a design inspired by the Nelson Bench:

With Christmas being in full summer in Chile, and given the very dry climate in Santiago, a cut pine tree is next to impossible to find as I quickly found out, so here was my response to the problem:

The first Christmas "tree" was designed around the idea of displaying those adorable little angels made by Chilean ceramist Carmen Jerez

..but then came more ideas and colours..
